Melacholy at its best

By:Ashlee Zlotnick

The stairs I stand on once again
brings back all the numbing feelings.
As the area filled up with thousands of people,
the day soon became real.
We had all lost one of the most dedicated teachers ever
and we gathered as a unity to pay our respects.
‘Testing,testing,1,2…’ A noise on the speakers
silenced the crowd as eulogies began.
There was not a dry eye as the Rabbi tried to get
rid of the lump in his throat as he spoke.
Then the doors opened…
The sound of rusted metal wheels the coffin out and
the thought of something so unstable was carrying
something so precious, pierced my body.
The long walk to the grave begins…
There is not a person out of line.
It feels like a march to the beginning of the end.
Due to all the people, the voices of the mourners, I couldn’t hear
but the hollow sound the sand made as it hit the
coffin, was so clear and so scary.
The wind carried the noise throughout the cemetery.
Birds flew by as the mourners said their prayer.
It was as if Gary’s soul was carried up to G-D
and then the day ended
and a new day will begin once again.
